We had a fabulous day out at Brooklands Museum in Surrey and I thoroughly enjoyed watching The Boy Child think that he'd become a racing driver.

Where do you dry laundry when the weather is rubbish and the clothes airer is full?

Thursday, 27 September 2012

Right Now ...

~ I'm surrounded by laundry; a combination of holiday clothes and bedding from our 2 house guests
~ I'm looking at a medium-sized mountain of ironing
~ I'm hoping that The Boy Child remembers his facts about Stephenson's Rocket for Show and Tell
~ I'm planning on typing up the minutes from the PTA meeting; as well as being renominated as a class rep, I also found myself nominated for the role of Secretary at the first PTA meeting of the new school year on Tuesday evening
~ I'm working on sorting through all those holiday photos; and looking forward to seeing what the professionals came up with
{bride and her brother}
~ I'm upset to learn that a sick friend is actually much sicker than we all realised
~ I'm waiting to hear about The Boy Child's Statement of Educational Needs; he was granted the extra help we requested, but we have yet to learn any of the details
~ I am so tired, thanks to Jet Lag
~ I need to get back to the gym; I'm feeling very sluggish
~ I need to catch up on Project Life and One Little Word
~ I'm stuck for ideas as to what to buy The Brainy One for his birthday; it's on Sunday
~ I'm wondering how can it be October next week

This post was inspired by Ali's Creative Lifts email for weeks 35-36:
"THE PROMPT
I've always loved those "currently" or "right now" or "around here" posts that pop up on people's blogs and scrapbook pages. Here's a recent one from me and one from Amanda Soule. It's a great way to tell the story of your own personal right now. What are you thinking about, feeling, hoping for, struggling with, watching, listening to, celebrating right now?
The how-to is super simple. Start each thought/sentence of your list with an "ing" word. Here's a few suggestions: thinking, dreaming, listening/hearing, watching, loving, feeling, counting, smelling, wanting, believing, making, planning, cultivating, living, etc. So many possibilities.

You're invited to join me on Thursday, September 27th and share a "currently" or "right now" or "around here" post or scrapbook page on your blog."

Gorgeous local colour ~ using a mixture of Spanish and sign language, I asked this lady if I could take her photo and was delighted when she said, "Si".

Photo a Day: 21st September

In Colombia, the night before a wedding, the groom sends a singer to his bride's house to serenade her.  Our nephew arranged for a Mariachi band to come to the house where we were all staying as a surprise.  It was such a surprise that the bride was in the shower!
It was brilliant to see the look on her face.

Cartagena: A Brief Glimpse

First impressions of Cartagena are favourable.  The architecture in the walled old city is wonderful, the streets are bright and clean, the locals are friendly and don't laugh when you try a few words of Spanish out on them.  The only mildly annoying aspect so far is the number of street hawkers trying to sell you hats, jewellery and general tourist tat.

~ street life ~
The rest of the house party, which comprises family of both bride and groom and assorted friends, have gone on a boat trip today.
Boats and I do not mix.
I opted to stay behind and am enjoying solitude, with the added attraction of WiFi, blogging and Facebook.  A number of the house party were worried about me being on my own all day.  No need to worry.  I have explored a small part of the walled city of Cartagena, been in to a beautiful church and taken loads of photos. And all before the streets were aired.

~ say cheese ~
My SiL and I made the best use of our last hour or so in Miami.
We were booked on a direct flight from Miami to Cartagena; Avianca then changed it at the 11th hour to route us via Medellin.  This meant actually over flying Cartagena to then change planes in Medellin and fly back to the coast again.
Still, we've made it to Cartagena, checked in to a wonderful Spanish colonial villa from the 18th Century and are now with the rest of the family.
Note to self: bring hair dryer and shampoo.  Hotel has TV and WiFi, but not these things.
Any one else think that female guests would prefer the former over the latter if it came to a choice?

I was happy to see that Miami Beach has its own version of London's Boris Bikes.  We rented two for an hour this morning and cycled all along the Miami Beach sea front, although we had to dismount when we got to the boardwalk. We saw far more than we would have done if we'd walked instead.  I may have been a little rusty on two wheels, but it was great fun and I'd recommend it as a way to get around.

Blue skies.
Sunshine.
Wearing shorts.
Eating breakfast on a terrace overlooking the Ocean.
Following my own advice to photograph the differences.
Having an amazing pedicure to refresh those teal toenails.
Hearing that The Boy Child got a star for good reading.

Hello to our first full day in Miami.

Move More, Eat Well: August

August was the month that was end-to-end summer holidays and I wasn’t at all sure how managing both The Boy Child and exercise would pan out.
As it happened, things turned out just fine.
I went to Zumba twice.
I went swimming eleven {11} times, including three {3} sessions of Family Splash with The Boy Child.
I walked the pooch fifteen {15} times.
The Boy Child went to Holiday Gym Club a total of nine {9} times.
I didn’t go to the gym at all during the last week of the month, as we were at mum’s house, but dog walking twice a day helped.
It’s become very clear to me that regular exercise is now of great importance.  I don’t just mean in relation to my general well-being; it’s more about how I feel in myself.  There are still things in my life that cause me, cause us, great sadness, worry and anger, but those feelings of achievement after Zumba or swimming all help to make me feel better about the things I cannot control.  It must be those endorphins that fitness geeks rave about!
Dietary wise, well, it’s that old chestnut, chocolate.  We are steadily eating our way through the large jar of Lindt eggs won by The Boy Child at the school fayre.  Even though we’ve given loads away, there still seems to be a never ending supply.  The good about them is that because they are quite rich, you can’t eat more than about half a dozen without feeling sick!
On the other hand, the recent good weather has meant a greater consumption of salad.  And I call that a result.
Five ways to get back on track:
1. Back to school means no need to factor in use of creche
2. Stop buying chocolate, even when it's on offer
3. When the munchies strike, eat fruit
4. Try out new activities such as Aquarobics
5. Spend 10 days in the sun

Photo a Day: 11th September

Yesterday I managed to misjudge reversing on to the drive.
All The Brainy One wanted to know was whether I or The Boy Child had been hurt.
He's a good man.
Today I had to photograph the car again, in order for the guy at the garage to provide an estimate for the repairs.  Seems they like to do the leg work on line before the car actually gets to them.
Who knew?

Hello Monday

Hello to booking next year's holiday.  There's nothing like being proactive.
Hello to last minute dress shopping.  It seems I may need a long dress for the wedding in Cartagena.
Hello to Street Dance class on Tuesday.  Here's hoping some more children turn up this week.
Hello to a visit to the Dental Hygienist.  Never pleasant, always necessary.
Hello to a pre-adventure trim.  I'm going to have to be bold and make sure my hairdresser does not cut my hair too short.
Hello to The Boy Child's first Show and Tell on Thursday.  What will he talk about?
Hello to the arrival of mum and Auntie V.
Hello to first coffee morning and second-hand uniform sale of the school year.
Hello to finding time to visit the gym.  It's going to be difficult.

Getting Creative

Sometimes the only thing to do is just to get stuck right in with playing around with paper and glue.  You might be surprised by the end results.
The Summer Manifesto 2012 album is coming along nicely.  I'm more than half way through now.
The inked pages are the completed ones.
I've even managed to put a few proper pages together.
These Sports Day photos have been sitting on my desk since, well, Sports Day.  And that was June 28th...
This is part of a double page spread about our nephew's wedding.  I thought I best get it done before embarking on the next leg of the wedding journey.  The design is a straight copy of month five of Shimelle's 4x6 Photo Love project
I feel content and happy to have made these this week.
And isn't that what having a hobby is all about?

Photo a Day: 6th September

I finalised the paperwork today for our up and coming Awfully Big Adventure. In just over a week's time, The Brainy One and I are leaving for the second part of our nephew's wedding; a full nuptial mass in the beautiful town (city?) of Cartagena on the Caribbean coast of Colombia.
There will also be a 3 night stop over in Miami on the way out.
That part of the trip will just be me and The Brainy One.
A bit like a mini second honeymoon, if you will.
It will be fantastic and slightly strange at the same time.
Fantastic because it will be just the two of us.
Slightly strange because we will be without The Boy Child.
As we are going to be away the best part of 10 days, my mum and Auntie V have stepped manfully in to the breech and will be taking excellent care of The Boy Child and the pooch.  I have no worries about that part of the 10 days at all.
Have any of you ever been to Cartagena?

One Little Word Blog Hop: September

Good morning/afternoon/evening and welcome to the One Little Word Blog Hop.  The hop is hosted by Margie, is international and has a wonderful 15 participants, all waiting and willing to share their One Little Word for 2012 with you.  If you've landed here from Kara, welcome.  I'm listed near the top of the hop, but don't worry if you get lost following the links ~ there's a full list of participants at the end of this post.
My husband {The Brainy One} chose our word for 2012enjoy.  Not because he wants us to be frivolous with our lives, but because he wants us to grasp every opportunity, good or bad, that comes our way this year.
This month, the idea was to take a breath.  In Ali's words, "No introspective writing. No thinking. No list of steps to follow. No mess."
But she did want a photo, self-portrait or otherwise.
This photo was taken at the end of May on my 44th birthday and is by far the best photo of me in recent years.  You may have even noticed that I use it on my blog profile (and on facebook, for those of you who know me in real life).
In regard to our word of "enjoy", it's been a good month.  We have survived the 8 weeks of summer holidays, we've made life-changing decisions and begun to put them in to practice, we've spent time with both families.  So, I'm looking in to September, which has its own huge adventure to be enjoyed, and I'm putting one foot in front of the other and believing that right now is where I'm supposed to be.
If you're moving on with the OLW Blog Hop, then your next destination is Jessica and you can find her here.
But, before you go ... 2012 is also the year of Happy Mail ~ the chance to receive a small parcel in the post, just because.
There's no catch. You don't have to do anything in return.  See this post, if you'd like to join in. Internationals welcome.
